This page from Pogson's log book shows the first observations of Asia made on April 18th and 19th 1861.

The letter to the pension superintendent asked for two pensioners to work as peons with pay of Rs.10/- each with quarters & warm clothing. The letter also mentions that people should be fit for the climate.
