The album contains photographs taken during the unveiling ceremony of the bicentennial plaque at IIA Bangalore campus on 06 January 1987. The bicentennial plaque was unveiled by Prof M. G. K. Menon, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), to commemorate the bicentennial of the setting up an observatory at Madras by Wiliam Petrie in 1786 to which the Indian Institute of Astrophysics traces the origin.

The album contains photos of Norman Robert Pogson, an English astronomer who worked in India at the Madras Observatory as a Government astronomer during 1861-1891. He undertook observations of comets and found numerous minor planets. Pictures of his father, wife, and children, as well as old photos of Madras and Kodaikanal Observatory, are archived here. Images of C. R. Ragunathachary, who worked with Norman Robert Pogson, can be seen in this album. Some photos are related to his private observatory, Hartwell House, in England.

It mainly includes an old photo of the Madras Observatory, a photocopy of the first observation taken in 1786 from the observatory, two pictures of Kater's pendulum hung in front of the Haswell clock in the observatory, a sketch of the Madras Observatory building from 1848 Taylor's catalogue and painting of Madras coast by Daniel.

The album contains photos related to the Solar Physics Observatory at Kodaikanal during Dr Anil Kumar Das's directorship. It was established in 1899 as a Solar Physics Observatory, and all the activities of the Madras Observatory were shifted to Kodaikanal. The photographs in this album illuminate the critical events in the history of the Kodaikanal Observatory from 1946 to 1955. The visit of eminent scientists and astronomers, official meetings and conferences, celebrations, and farewells and staff of the observatory during the period can be seen in the album.

A copy of the first observation made at the Madras Observatory and a page from Madras M. S. record is preserved with photos of the Madras Observatory, Shelton clock and granite slab with Latin inscription at Madras Observatory. A map of Madras Observatory land in 1826 and a sketch of John Goldingham swinging Kater's pendulum hung in front of Haswell clock in the observatory.
