            This item was about the high resolution line sketch spectra captured by John evershed during his experiment at Kodaikanal Observatory. While experimenting, he came across to capturing the high resolution spectra of Altair, Nova Aquila, Arcturus in the observatory. In this sketch, he pictured the resolution spectra that he observed as Umbra for high resolution and Penumbra for low resolution.

            This item was about total solar eclipse of 18th August 1868. At Masulipatnam Pogson detected the hydrogen line emission, with a spectroscope. He saw a bright yellow line near the position of D lines of Sodium. The line originated from hitherto unknown element later termed as helium after the source of earliest detection.             This item was about the discovery of 5 Asteroids (or minor planets as they were known at that time) Asia, Sappho, Sylvia, Camilla and Vera at Madras. The first was named asteroid 'Asia' as it was the first to be discovered by an observer on this continent. This page from Pogson's log book shows the first observations of Asia made on April 18th and 19th 1861.

            The letter is to the Executive Engineer enquiring whether there is an objection to building some meteorological building in the compound and proposing to the Govt. of India to build a house for the observer. The letter to the superintendent of the workshop was regarding providing materials to build a machine for the observatory. The letter to the pension superintendent asked for two pensioners to work as peons with pay of Rs.10/- each with quarters & warm clothing. The letter also mentions that people should be fit for the climate.
