Vinod Kumar Gaur (born 1936) is an Indian seismologist, a former director of the National Geophysical Research Institute, and an honorary emeritus scientist at CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, known for his prediction of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Sciences in 1979.

Vinod Kumar Gaur is a distinguished Indian seismologist and geophysicist renowned for his pioneering research on Himalayan tectonics and earthquake science. He is credited with introducing the “host rock effect” in geo-electromagnetics, using GPS geodesy to measure the motion of the Indian and Eurasian plates, and employing seismic tomography to study the Deccan lithosphere. His career included positions as Scientific Officer at the National Physical Laboratory (UK), Professor and Dean of Research at the University of Roorkee, Director of the National Geophysical Research Institute, and Secretary of the Department of Ocean Development, Government of India. He later served as Distinguished Professor and Honorary Emeritus Scientist at CSIR’s Fourth Paradigm Institute and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. He received numerous awards, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1979), Edward A. Flinn III Award (2000), Meghnad Saha Birth Centenary Medal (2006), and D.N. Wadia Medal (2007), he is a Fellow of several prestigious academies, including INSA, IASc, NASI, and TWAS.

Rajiv Gandhi (20 August 1944 – 21 May 1991) was the 6th Prime Minister of India, serving from 1984 to 1989. The elder son of Indira Gandhi and grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, he entered politics reluctantly after the death of his younger brother, Sanjay Gandhi, in 1980. Rajiv became Prime Minister following his mother’s assassination in 1984, leading the Congress Party to a record electoral victory that year. However, his government faced criticism over corruption scandals, such as the Bofors case, and challenges in handling regional conflicts.
