Vinod Kumar Gaur is a distinguished Indian seismologist and geophysicist renowned for his pioneering research on Himalayan tectonics and earthquake science. He is credited with introducing the “host rock effect” in geo-electromagnetics, using GPS geodesy to measure the motion of the Indian and Eurasian plates, and employing seismic tomography to study the Deccan lithosphere. His career included positions as Scientific Officer at the National Physical Laboratory (UK), Professor and Dean of Research at the University of Roorkee, Director of the National Geophysical Research Institute, and Secretary of the Department of Ocean Development, Government of India. He later served as Distinguished Professor and Honorary Emeritus Scientist at CSIR’s Fourth Paradigm Institute and the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. He received numerous awards, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1979), Edward A. Flinn III Award (2000), Meghnad Saha Birth Centenary Medal (2006), and D.N. Wadia Medal (2007), he is a Fellow of several prestigious academies, including INSA, IASc, NASI, and TWAS.
