              The letter is from Charles P. Butler, Ag: Director of Kodaikanal & Madras Observatories to the Agents for Government Consignments, Madras, replying to his letter No. 2844, returning the receipt for the dividing machine with the clause inserted and installed as suggested. He also says the damage might have been caused during the carriage of the case up the hill from Periyakulam, asking whether he should claim it against the carrying company or if their Department will deal with it. He suggests instructing the Director General for stores to insist on all bright steel parts of delicate scientific instruments being heavily tallowed by the consignors as part of the packing specification.
