He took an active part in two eclipses, total eclipse of the Sun 1868 and 1871. He was elected a fellow of Royal Astronomical Society in 1872. He brought out a pamphlet on the transit of Venus, This was not only in English but also in several vernacular languages.

The first part describes the scale division of the spectroscope micrometer that defines the bright lines observed in the spectrum of the southeast by east prominence and the ordinary lines in the solar spectrum that were measured before and after the eclipse. The second part includes a sketch depicting the principal solar spots measured at Masulipatnam on August 18, 1868. The sketch shows four spots: A, B, C, and D.
