This item was an instrument used to measure time. A wire rope is wound around a drum which unwinds in a fixed time under gravity. A maker which moves horizontally, marks out the time elapsed on a linear scale. This instrument was used before the invention of the pendulum clock for Astronomical measurements at the Madras Observatory.

The fond contains observations of the meridian circle reductions ( refers to the process of correcting the observed zenith distances measured by a meridian circle instrument ) taken from the Madras Observatory from the year 1862 to 1887. Meridian circle reductions refers to a process in astronomy and celestial navigation that involves observations made with a meridian circle instrument.

The album contains archival documents related to the building, instruments and observations at the Madras Observatory. It mainly includes an old photo of the Madras Observatory, a photocopy of the first observation taken in 1786 from the observatory, two pictures of Kater's pendulum hung in front of the Haswell clock in the observatory, a sketch of the Madras Observatory building from 1848 Taylor's catalogue and painting of Madras coast by Daniel.
