Biographical history
Gustave de Pontécoulant full name is Philippe Gustave le Doulcet de Pontécoulant (1795–1874). He was a notable French astronomer and mathematician. He used mathematical methods developed by Poisson and Lagrange to predict the return of Halley's Comet with great precision in 1829. His calculations for the perihelion passage were accurate to within two days. He also published several works on celestial physics, including "Théorie Analytique du Système du Monde" and "Traité élémentaire de Physique Céleste." Philippe Gustave le Doulcet, Comte de Pontécoulant, was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and had a significant impact on the field of astronomy.
