Biographical history
John Evershed (1864-1956) was an English astronomer who, in 1909, discovered the horizontal motion of gases outward from the centres of sunspots, a phenomenon sometimes called the Evershed effect. In 1906, Evershed became assistant director of the Kodaikanal and Madras observatories in India, later becoming director. Evershed retired in 1923, returning to England; in 1925, he built his own solar observatory at Ewhurst.

The letter is a forwarded copy of letter No.2271-F.E. dated 30 March 1912 from the Finance Department for the information of the Director of Kodaikanal and Madras Observatories to convey the sanction to the extension by a further period of 2 years to the compulsory subscribers to the existing Provident Funds to join the new fund. The letter was forwarded by the Meteorological Department
