Biographical history
John Evershed (1864-1956) was an English astronomer who, in 1909, discovered the horizontal motion of gases outward from the centres of sunspots, a phenomenon sometimes called the Evershed effect. In 1906, Evershed became assistant director of the Kodaikanal and Madras observatories in India, later becoming director. Evershed retired in 1923, returning to England; in 1925, he built his own solar observatory at Ewhurst.

The letter is written by Gilbert Thomas to Charles Michie Smith, in which he assumed that Michie Smith meant by saying "at our expense" that the Periyakulam Observer's house was built by the Public Works Department and charged to the Government of India, just like the houses of the staff at Kodaikanal. If so, Thomas requests Michie Smith to ask the PWD to dispose of the house and credit the amount to the Imperial funds. He also mentioned that the money wouldn't be available for their use, even if they were to sell it. And it's the responsibility of the Public Works Department to dispose of it.
