Biographical history

Sidney Gerald Burrard (12 August 1860 – 16 March 1943) was a British army officer and geodesist who made significant contributions to surveying in India. He served in the Royal Engineers and later became the Surveyor General of India (1911–1919). Burrard was deeply involved in refining the measurement of the Great Trigonometrical Survey, including work on gravitational anomalies in the Himalayas, which influenced theories about the Earth's shape and crustal structure. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in recognition of his scientific contributions to geodesy and cartography in the Indian subcontinent.
