Scope and content
This item talks about the Kodaikanal Observatory. The Kodaikanal Astrophysical Observatory, formerly under the Indian Meteorological Department, is now an autonomous institution named the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. This elevation follows the recommendations of the Committee on Organisation of Scientific Research, overseen by Dr. Bhagavantam. The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism implemented this change, allocating a budget for autonomous functioning. The Observatory specializes in designing optical parts for astronomical instruments, saving foreign exchange. It conducts solar studies, recently sending a team to Mexico for solar eclipse photography. The Bhagavatam Committee also recommended autonomy for the Institute of Tropical Meteorology and Colaba/Alibag Laboratories.
