Biographical history
Thomas Glanville Taylor was an English astronomer born on November 22, 1804, and died on May 4, 1848, at 43. He was the son of Thomas Taylor, an assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Taylor worked extensively at the Madras Observatory, where he was appointed director of the East India Company's observatory, arriving there on September 15, 1830. His notable works include producing the Madras Catalogue of Stars and contributing to the Trigonometrical Survey for determining longitude and latitude. He married Eliza Baratty and had three sons and a daughter. Taylor's catalogues were of great importance in navigation and for the Trigonometrical Survey. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society on February 10, 1842, and was also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He played an instrumental role in establishing an observatory at Doddabetta in Ootacamund. Unfortunately, Taylor suffered from tuberculosis and passed away in Southampton in 1848.
