            IND-IIA-F014 · Fond · 1868

This fond contains collection of items that provide information about solar eclipses that occurred during the time period of 1868-2006. The collection includes photographs of total solar eclipses that took place on different dates, and covered from different places as well as sketches that help to illustrate the phenomenon and the path of the eclipses.

Parte de Observation note on Madras equatorial observations on stars, minor planets, and satellites

The item contains three pieces of information preserved in a single laminated sheet. The first document is a handwritten address slip of sending some objects from Madras Observatory to the collector of north Arcot Chittoor. The second document is an observation note on the moon eclipse on 22 January 1888. The third one is also notes of observation taken in 1960, 1964, 1969, 1972, and 1975 but the other details need to be recognized.

Parte de Photographs of "More than a Century of Eclipse Expeditions 1868-2006 for which IIA participated."

This item was about the measurements of spectrum and solar spots. It is divided into two parts. The first part describes the scale division of the spectroscope micrometer that defines the bright lines observed in the spectrum of the southeast by east prominence and the ordinary lines in the solar spectrum that were measured before and after the eclipse. The second part includes a sketch depicting the principal solar spots measured at Masulipatnam on August 18, 1868. The sketch shows four spots: A, B, C, and D.

Parte de Compilation of Pogson's observations and drawing

This item was about total solar eclipse of 18th August 1868. At Masulipatnam Pogson detected the hydrogen line emission, with a spectroscope. He saw a bright yellow line near the position of D lines of Sodium. The line originated from hitherto unknown element later termed as helium after the source of earliest detection. Hand coloured sketch of the solar spectrum during the Total Solar Eclipse of 1868. Hand coloured picture of the sun before and after the total solar eclipse 1868.

            Path of Totality 1868 Eclipse

This item was about the sketch of the path of a total solar eclipse that occurred in India in 1868. It depicts the Peninsula of India and shows the track of the Moon's shadow during the eclipse on August 17, 1868. The sketch was created by V.T. & A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and includes scalar measurements at the bottom.
