Part of Compilation of Pogson's observations and drawing

This item was about total solar eclipse of 18th August 1868. At Masulipatnam Pogson detected the hydrogen line emission, with a spectroscope. He saw a bright yellow line near the position of D lines of Sodium. The line originated from hitherto unknown element later termed as helium after the source of earliest detection. Hand coloured sketch of the solar spectrum during the Total Solar Eclipse of 1868. Hand coloured picture of the sun before and after the total solar eclipse 1868.

              Pogson, Norman Robert

This item was about the sketch of the path of a total solar eclipse that occurred in India in 1868. It depicts the Peninsula of India and shows the track of the Moon's shadow during the eclipse on August 17, 1868. The sketch was created by V.T. & A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and includes scalar measurements at the bottom.

This item was about the hand-colored picture of the Sun, as observed by N.R. Pogson at Masulipatnam with the Smythian five-foot Telescope from the Hartwell observatory, which has a power of 52. In the picture, Pogson has made two sketches of the solar eclipse, explaining how the Sun was seen immediately after the disappearance and how it was seen immediately before the reappearance.
