Smith was born in Keig in Aberdeenshire on 13 July 1854 the son of Jane Robertson and Rev William Pirrie Smith of the newly created Free Church of Scotland. He was educated locally and then went to first the University of Aberdeen then the University of Edinburgh to study mathematics and physics, graduating BSc in 1876. in 1899 he became the first Director of the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory.
Prof. C. Sivaram is a retired senior professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bangalore. He received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1977. He worked at IISc for a few years before joining IIA in 1980. He retired from IIA in 2010 but continues to work actively. Prof.C Sivaram has received an Honourable Mention' in the essay competition of Gravity Research Foundation (Mass. USA) for the year 2008, for his essay titledOJ 287: New Testing Ground for General Relativity and Beyond'. He is a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
