Herbert Hall Turner FRS (13 August 1861 – 20 August 1930) was a British astronomer and seismologist.
Dennis Walsh (12 June 1933 – 1 June 2005) was an English astronomer. He was an early radio astronomer, as well as an optical astronomer. He was best known for his discovery in 1979 of the first example of a gravitational lens, B0957+561, using an optical telescope.
Peter Augustus Wehinger, an observational astronomer known for his work on comets and quasars, died in his sleep on 27 April 2015. His career spanning almost fifty years began with construction of a 1.3-m telescope at the University of Michigan and ended after retirement from the Steward Observatory where he helped advance major telescope projects and raise funds for student scholarships
Fred Lawrence Whipple (November 5, 1906 – August 30, 2004) was an American astronomer, who worked at the Harvard College Observatory for more than 70 years. Among his achievements were asteroid and comet discoveries, the "dirty snowball" hypothesis of comets, and the invention of the Whipple shield.
Sir Arnold Whittaker Wolfendale(25 June 1927 – 21 December 2020) was a British astronomer who served as the fourteenth Astronomer Royal from 1991 to 1995. He was Professor of Physics at Durham University from 1965 until 1992 and served as president of the European Physical Society (1999–2001). He was president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1981 to 1983.
